When I get asked how I make textures, many are surprised to hear that most are strict Photoshop jobs. The one below though, started out as a 3D model, redered in Max, and finalized in Photoshop. I typically rely on 3D for shapes that would be difficult or too time consuming to do in 2D. Usually in case of non-organic textures, the more complex the shape, and the less rectangular, the more difficult it is to do in Photoshop.
