For most people life is a journey through endless polarities. Good cannot exist without evil; happiness without sadness; wrong without right. As long as one remains within such realm of duality one is always surrounded by opposites and has to choose one over the other. Every choice made is a step in one of two directions. Every step taken leads to a new choice to be made... The individual perception of dualism is mostly influenced by personal beliefs and interpretations of life events. Which in turn are primarily ruled by the dominant characteristics of human nature like desire, fear, laziness, or selfishness. The collective perception of dualism is created through cultural norms that shift and change over time. These norms are largely shaped by influencers (individuals, religions, organizations, businesses, etc) who push and promote their own beliefs or ideas, often with hidden agendas, which inevitably are more or less dualistic. The understanding of the nature of duality gradually reveals itself as a consequence of objective reflection on human culture. A realization that ultimately the duality of things is a human created concept. The good or evil is only so if we make it to be or impose on others that it is so. In this image I wanted to depict the perplexity that duality imposes on a human being, and the ever present attainability of liberation. This image is the cover of the 2006 French edition of Robert Silverberg's novel "In another country".
