A futuristic scenario depicting the somewhat neglected, massive industrial suburban areas of the future mega cities.
I did this 3D Sci-Fi city image for a contest. Initially, the idea was to have a view over a futuristic city with a nice progression from the foreground and the city as the far background. I also planned for more air cars. Due to time constraints I ended up making many changes, so the original idea was no longer there. The whole image was created over a 3 weeks period of time, and took me about 230 hours to complete. Everything was modeled and rendered in 3DS MAX 2. All textures were painted in Photoshop.
Suburbs 2100 turned out to be a great success. It was awarded first place at a raytrace competition held at The Party'98 in Denmark. Later, it won an international Fantasy category contest held at the 3D Design & Animation Conference in USA. It was also featured in several magazines, 3D art educational books and was even shown on TV. This must be one of my most popular and successful Scifi images to date.

WOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOW!!! This image is so beautiful!!! The texture is mesmerizing!!! This is going to sound like I'm crazy, but I've always dreamed of what a futuristic city would look like, and this is the type of futuristic city I've always imagined. I know you've put in a lot of time and effort with this image, but thank you so much for taking so much time to create such a beautiful image. If I had the money, I'd buy this image in a heartbeat! Heck, I'd buy all of your beautiful images in a heartbeat! YOU ROCK!!!
Pretty impressive... You should try Singapore, and picture it in the next 50 years what it would be from now.

Hey this is the nicest sci-fi pic ive ever seen =) I work too with photoshop , and a question appears...how do you do it? hm...could you write tutorials? :D
I know for your work, about ten years, if I remember well the time when you exibit your work in Computer Arts. In Bryce you made some very beautiful pictures.I think, you are THAT Michlczyk:-) All the best, Kodan!
Amazing art. I always thought this 'suburbs 2100' image and 'future bandits' set the perfect example of how a game should look like. It's been on my harddrive for years. We're getting very close to doing this realtime (Crysis for example).
I was very impressed by the composition of the imagery in this picture so that the design itself is easily accessible to the human eye. The earth tones used create a sense of industrial era combined with the sprawling roadway and the minature workers. I am actually attempting to fabricate my own futuristic designs and I find inspiration in images that capture the feeling as this piece does.
brought back memories from back in 1993 -> recreated the feeling of "flashback" (the adventure game by delphine software) :) absolutely fabulous picture !!! purely awesome !!! THANK YOU :) [mesmer _ myspace.com/mesmer1979]
This is a great piece of Sci-Fi art! It has been my desktop background for a whole year in 1999. This pic was incredibly impressive when it first came out, it still is, but not nearly as much. A poster would be nice though, a reminder of 3D art of the 90s.
It's definitely interesting for sure. But if that's suburbia in the next century I'm glad I won't be around by then. No offense but where's the grass and trees?
I am one of the few lucky people who downloaded this image in a larger version (from your old site). It is amazing how this image, despite its age, is still one of the best images I have ever seen bering created. Well done.
Compliments on the early morning sunlight falling on the metallic object in the foreground/upper right. That's REAL sun, not a representation. Or so it feels.
I love how you used large machinery and towers to frame the image and hold the attention of the viewer, while using what looks like a pantograph rail line to give the feeling of something beyond the scene. It gives the improbable scene a sense of realism. Excellent work.
WOW!!!!! You ARE good... fantastic work done there!!! I don't usually like the 3D arts because there is no personnages in the drawings and if there are they look messed up, but you got this one straight man!!! I love the surrealistic appearance of the drawing!!!! Keep up the good work!!!! ;)
Well,,, Hehe ok trick trick ahh man!!IAm gonna LOUD: HOW THE HELL DID YOU CREATE THAT ENVIROMENT AND tHE OTHER STUFF AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh why cant i create something in max 4?ok ok joke joke,,,,without joke how did you create that......welll iam not asking anything,,anyway because no one can help me iam crying
well, doubters of flying cars, our technology level has been doubling every two years since the fifties, but once we build thinking computers they'll be doing the thinking. they ARE technology, so they'll be doubling their efficiency every two years. if this continues, we should be upgrading our technology infinitely every two years by the year 2030. scary eh? anyway, I'm afraid I didn't like this picture as much as the others. to me this says "partly abandoned space port with an atmosphere". no hustle and bustle, but it IS a good pic.
Jesus.. One helluva great pic. But eye can't rest on it.. But hell, who cares! 3D isn't the same thing as hand made art, so... (And the one who said that we won't have flying cars in 99 years, hehe, we already do... they just are not for sale yet. They're more like jets though, but they can stay still in air.)
this really gives me the feeling that i am part of the hussle and bussle of this little city. wonderful attention to detail. you've really given life to this picture.
What an amazing picture. I really enjoy the attention you've paid to the catenary wires on the railroad tracks! Bein a model railroader, that brought the picture a little closer to me!
Dude, do you work for George Lucas and the Star Wars companies? This is amazing! I'd get a job doing this kind of stuff, cause buddy, this is really great stuff.
*jaw goes through the floor* I take my other earlier comments back: this picture has the BEST DETAIL I've ever seen, in any sci-fi picture. The textures here are authentic, and even the grease and rust on the bill-boards and the construction work are so realistic. And I agree: you've captured the atmosphere and movement very well. And there are PEOPLE in this picture!! *cheers* Fantastic job, you've taken great care on this one. Well, there isn't anything left to say... I'm speechless!
Could somebody please donate a Cray supercomputer to this guy, man, this shit is BRILLIANT! Makes me want to remove 3ds from my pc, coz this makes my shit look like...ehhh...SHIT!
I said it once and I'll say it again, if you're not working for a video game company then you're missing your lot in life. Trust me, I've worked for one and they could definitely use your skills.
Whoa.. quite impressive! Again you have excellent perspective, and it all looks so real as well. Wonderful colors, the contrasting orange/gold and blue is simply a beautiful combination.
rachael kirby: love it can see this image in my next book.
