well you draw a poly line to the contour you wand and rotate it - the model work itself isn't - for the most part in this case doesn't look all that complex. what makes it is chouice of materials, composition, balance that sort of thing and of course the light sources inside the afterthrust on the ships and basicly just not overlooking ANYTHING. and if you find you have in the first render going back and fixing it and running render again (and again and again until everything is just right). and that takes work and craft and immagination and i salute the artist (though again not the context he created for it in this case) background and fog depth cue are also appearently key elements well exicuted.

The VERY last thing you would ever see in your life is a beat up space ship, too important to keep the exterior in good condition.

Now that's what I didn't like in new movies like Alien 4 for example the Cruiser was all rusted inside ,DAMN I I WEN'T ABOARD A SPACE CRUISER AND IT WAS ALL RUSTED I WOULD GET OFF REALLY FAST.

Good Picture! By the way, Antiphoton, how often have you seen a modern fighter that was scratched up and dusty? I've been to many an air show, and have yet to see a beat up anything there.
